JOHNNY DEPP was the biggest winner on the night, bagging two gongs.His portrayal of Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End won him Best Comedic Performance, and he also scooped the Best Villain gong for his role in Sweeney Todd.
However Depp's performance in Pirates failed to secure the blockbuster top prize in the Best Film category, with Transformers instead taking the title.
The bash was held at Gibson Amphitheatre in California, yards away from Universal Studios where firefighters had earlier put out a blaze that had ripped through a section of the park.
Host MIKE MYERS kicked off the show by challenging RnB star CHRIS BROWN to a dance-off and later appeared in different comedy guises, including his old character Wayne Campbell, of Wayne's World fame, with co-star DANA CARVEY, who played Garth.
ADAM SANDLER received the show's highest honour, the Generation Award, and, after being introduced by TOM CRUISE, he took to the stage to sing Nobody Does it Better - "The most arrogant thing I have ever done," he later added.
Best Summer Movie So Far went to Iron Man - its star ROBERT DOWNEY JR. picked up the prize on its behalf.
WILL SMITH won Best Male Performance for I Am Legend and ELLEN PAGE won Female Performance for Juno.
Musical entertainment on the night was provided by COLDPLAY, who performed new single Violet Hill live for the first time, and the PUSSYCAT DOLLS showcased their latest track, When I Grow Up, in typical sexy style.
Other awards on the night included Never Back Down stars SEAN FARIS and CAM GIGANDET winning Best Fight Scene; ZAC EFRON for Best Breakthrough Performance for Hairspray; and BRIANA EVIGAN and ROBERT HOFFMAN for Best Kiss in Step Up 2: The Streets.
